Tomorrow sees a trip to old friends Northampton. Billed by many as a match from which we need to return with something, I feel it is too early for any panic. Having watched every league game so far, I am seeing similar performances to the early part of last season, namely some good passages of play marred by sloppiness in both boxes.
Those who…[Read more]

I preferred looking at the table at the start of the season. Naming us “AFC” Wimbledon was a master stroke. Until we play in the same division as AFC Bournemouth at least 🙂

Well done Singapore, Windlesham and Colum for your thorough match analyses, just what’s required and please keep it coming.
Mac – could be an interesting season ahead and …. no pressure on the games count down to the first all-revealing 10!!!
Devon – please don’t change (LOL) -

Who would want to be a football referee! The problem is that the end-of-match reports from losing Gaffers would all be the same: “rubbish, worst ref in history, that wisnae a penalty…” By the time the junior secretary in the Department of Waster Paper had sorted them out, then I’m sure they would be of no relevance. After all, our Gaffer has not…[Read more]

Thanks for the responses Windlesham / Colum.
I’m now wondering if the ref from last night was promoted from league two (in a ‘whistle-off’ perhaps?) and is now bottom of league one…
We might improve… but I doubt he ever could. -

Devon – In addition to marks from both managers I understand that there should be an independent assessor at each match. If an official consistently receives poor marks then he/she can be ‘relegated’ to a lower level league. The problem of course arises when all referees in a league are equally poor!!

Good question Devon Womble. My understanding is that each manager marks the official’s performance. Over time these are monitored, and persistent poor performers are ranked further down the football refereeing pyramid. Trouble is, there aren’t really enough volunteers. So we end up in the situation we have.

Hey Rob :
Can you get a transcript of the programme article?
And in Danish football news, I was one of twenty fans when Esbjerg travelled three hours each way on Monday night to Aalborg in North Jutland. We felt very well looked after and were never in any danger as there were twelve security staff looking after us!
That makes it an AFCW type…[Read more]

Would just like to thank those at the game for their excellent reports. Despite outward appearances, it would seem that we are better than some of us would believe.
I have a question though….
With such blatant evidence against the pillock with the whistle last night, is there not some kind of ‘Yellow/Red’ card for refs too?
Last night’s…[Read more] -

Ken Newman writes — After the loss against Bolton things did not look rosy. We had played really well for the first 25 minutes when Barcham hit home a cracker to give us the lead. After that things went downhill. A goalmouth scramble saw the ball go through a forest of legs and Clarke, who was unsighted from the original shot, had it pass beneath…[Read more]

Lovely piece Colum, really giving those who could make the match a sense of how it felt to be there!
I agree that Elliott was superb, it is just frustrating that he is such a curate’s egg of a player! Even amongst his awesomeness last night, he was the one who missed the easiest opportunity to score, sending a near post bullet header wide with…[Read more]

Decisions! Decisions! They cost us proud. Unfortunately last night’s game will be remembered by decisions by those we have little control over. The performance of the referee is what everyone will be talking about, including Scunthorpe fans, but as most of the important decisions went against us, we’ll feel most hard done by.
Once again it had all…[Read more] -

I share your pain Singapore Don, and broadly agree with your match summary. Personally I think that video footage proves that their penalty was a blatant dive (and right in front of the ‘assistant’). I didn’t have a good view of our penalty shout, but the players seemed to be livid and that is normally a good sign.
Of the players, Kelly is a…[Read more]

I am thoroughly depressed, but then I never take defeat very well. How on earth we didn’t get a point from that game is beyond me. That’s four games we’ve played well in now (well for a good chunk of each game), and four defeats. Clearly something is fundamentally wrong, something is not clicking, and it’s hard to put your finger on what…[Read more]

Oh well at least it’s going to be better than my appearance o WDON a few seasons back after a few cleansing ales. John Green eat your heart out!
I’m going for a 2-1 victory to open our account against Scunny who I saw regularly a few seasons back.

Not confident but hoping to wake up to good news.
Hopefully the programme uses the word “Legend” when talking about the one and only Robert Smith! -
